A History of Basketball

August 7th, 2008 by admin

In December of 1891 James Naismith, an instructor form the YMCA Training School, (Springfield College) started to create an active sport game in order to keep his students in norm, and as a result, he invented a game, in which the basket was hung at the high of 3,5 meters and on the elevated track. However, the basket was a peach one, and it caused many difficulties in the process of manual retrieve of the ball.

Such peach baskets were used until 1906, and only in 1906, they were replaces by the    hoops made of metal and backboards. The rules were simple: there were two teams, which were contesting with each other, and that team would win, which will score more balls into the basket.

When the diary of J. Naismith was found in 2006, there was stated that he really was very nervous about a new game invention, as a lot of people were trying to invent one universal game, which will be as popular as football, however all the attempts failed. He wrote that he had combined the rules of the children game “Duck on a Rock” with the rules, which he invented by himself and called the game “Basket Ball”.

That is a history of the game of basketball.
