The five-player format was introduced during an intercollegiate competition in Iowa on January 18, 1896. At the beginning of 20th century, the game had spread many colleges, which were situated in the Midwest and East. This amount persisted to enlarge and till the WWI 360 colleges had played the game.
In 1915 the YMCA, the NCAA, and the Amateur Athletic Union joined together to modernize the game, and complect a committee to make rules. The period saw the foundation of some regional conferences. The NCAA Men’s College Basketball Championship was held in 1939 in Evanston. In 1940 the first college basketball game was aired on TV.
Till 1950, the NCAA tournament had 8 teams contesting against each other. They represented eight districts of the NCAA. The amount of teams was grown to 16the following year. In such format, 10 meeting champions prepared automatically when the other six teams were selected on the performance’s basis. In 1954, the amount of teams raised to 24, in 1975 - to 32 teams. In 1980 it was grown to 48 and in 1985 - to 64.
Over the years, such kind of competition has undergone a remarkable alter. There are many players who demonstrate their talent and have become stars.
